The El Paso Lobos suffered a 27-6 defeat against the Miners on December 12, 1999, at the Miners' home field, ending the Lobos' 13-2 regular season with a loss. The Miners, now 14-1, maintained their unbeaten conference streak with 6-0 in division play and clinched the league's homefield advantage. The Lobos, coached by Ivory Roberts, had already clinched the division but dropped to a 13-3 record.
The scoring started early as Miners quarterback Brian Kilmer completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Robert Peterson at 9:35 in the first quarter, quickly followed by a successful extra point kick by Eric Ross, putting the Miners ahead 7-0. Less than eight minutes later, running back Brian Rayner scored on a 5-yard run, adding another touchdown and extra point to make the score 14-0.
The Lobos struggled offensively throughout the game. Their only points came from two field goals by Bradford Pettus. Pettus made a 34-yard field goal in the third quarter, reducing the deficit to 17-3, and later a 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 17-6. However, the Lobos failed to generate any touchdowns during the match.
Miners' Eric Ross contributed two field goals of his own, including a 54-yard kick in the third quarter. Brian Kilmer led the Miners' passing efforts with 19 completions on 29 attempts for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Rayner rushed 39 times for 199 yards and two touchdowns, ensuring a strong ground attack. Wide receivers Donald McCoy and Matthew Rollins contributed significantly with 81 and 35 receiving yards respectively, with Rollins also scoring a rushing touchdown.
Defensively, the Miners applied pressure with three sacks and registered an interception, while the Lobos recorded two sacks but no turnovers.
The Lobos offense, led by 42 passing attempts and 20 completions for 186 yards, failed to score a touchdown and threw one interception. Their ground game was limited to 50 yards on 13 carries without touchdowns.
Penalties were minimal for both sides, with the Lobos avoiding any infractions, while the Miners had two penalties for 10 yards.
Despite the loss, the Lobos maintain their division title but will enter the postseason with a defeat after dropping their first game of the season. The Miners extend their winning streak to 14 games and continue to demonstrate dominance with their clinched homefield advantage.
Coach Ivory Roberts will look to adjust his team's strategy as they prepare for the playoffs. The Lobos now stand at a season record of 13-3, looking to rebound in the postseason.
