The Lobos under head coach Ivory Roberts once again demonstrated why they are the division’s top team, cruising to a 47-10 victory over the Rockets on Sunday at home. With the win, El Paso improved to an impressive 11-1 overall record and a perfect 6-0 in the division, extending their winning streak to six games and solidifying their clinched playoff berth.

Despite an early 6-0 lead by the Rockets’ Robert Sweet, who rushed 24 yards for a touchdown on a quick strike just over a minute into the game, the Lobos responded swiftly. Kicker Bradford Pettus opened El Paso’s scoring with a 54-yard field goal to make it 7-3, avoiding an early hole thanks to some mistakes by Houston, including a crucial fumble recovered by Lobos’ Christopher Morgan.

What followed was a display of offensive balance and defensive dominance. Lobos’ quarterback Josef Smith, who completed 27 of 42 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns, grew into the game beautifully after the early phases. His connection with tight end Raymond Ashe, who had 118 receiving yards and a touchdown, proved especially lethal. El Paso's ground game also flourished thanks to Xavier Gayle, rushing for 72 yards and scoring once, and Ron Pooler, who impressively recorded three rushing touchdowns in addition to his receiving work.

The Lobos’ defense put the clamps on the Rockets’ offense, sacking Houston’s quarterback Aaron Howard six times and forcing four interceptions. Howard, who struggled under pressure, finished with only 141 passing yards and four picks. The Lobos’ opportunistic defense also forced a fumble and recovered it, with cornerback Christopher Morgan making a big impact.

A turning point came late in the second quarter after the Lobos had knotted the score at 10-10. Smith led a 13-yard touchdown strike to Pooler, followed by an extra point to take the lead into halftime. El Paso came out firing in the second half, with Smith hitting Ashe on a 17-yard touchdown play early in the third quarter, putting the Lobos comfortably ahead for good. Pettus was flawless on field goal attempts, converting all four tries, including a long 51-yarder that further extended the lead.

The Lobos’ commanding performance continued across all three phases of the game, executing with precision and maintaining physical dominance throughout. This win not only extends their division-best record but also exemplifies the team’s continuity and momentum as they prepare for the postseason.

“We wanted to show our resilience after the quick Rockets lead early on,” Roberts said postgame. “Our guys executed the game plan with discipline on offense and defense, and it’s great to see Smith and our playmakers step up when it mattered most. We’re focused on sustaining this momentum as we head into the stretch run.”

While the Rockets remain stuck at 4-8, struggling to find answers against a dynamic Lobos squad, El Paso fans have every reason to be excited. The team’s balanced attack, combined with a relentless defense, bodes well for the playoff push. A strong finish could well see these Lobos going far in the postseason, a logical continuation of a season marked by consistent dominance and team chemistry built under Roberts’ leadership.
