The Lobos maintained their undefeated start to the 1999 regular season by edging the Rangers 12-3 on the road in Week 2 play Sunday. Head coach Ivory Roberts' team improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in division games, while the Rangers fell to 1-1 and 0-1 in the division under Gerald Nishida.

The Rangers opened the scoring early in the first quarter. A 34-yard field goal by Jesse Diaz put El Paso's home team on the board, 3-0, with 8:26 remaining in the quarter. The Lobos responded in the second quarter as kicker Bradford Pettus connected on a 25-yard field goal at 14:25 to tie the game at 3-3.

Momentum shifted further in favor of the Lobos midway through the second quarter. Quarterback Josef Smith found tight end Raymond Ashe for a decisive 5-yard touchdown pass, giving the visitors a 9-3 lead. Pettus' successful extra point made it 10-3 with 4:20 left until halftime. The Lobos' defense contributed notably, including a key safety in the third quarter when Major Troy sacked Rangers quarterback Daniel Fuhr in the end zone, adding two points to extend the gap to 12-3.

Josef Smith finished the game with 200 passing yards, one touchdown, and an additional 11 yards rushing. Running back Xavier Gayle contributed 76 rushing yards plus 12 receiving yards, while Robert Peery led receiving with 77 yards. The Lobos relied heavily on their running game, amassing 148 rushing yards on 35 carries.

The Rangers struggled offensively, managing only 87 passing yards and 96 rushing yards without reaching the end zone. Daniel Fuhr completed 6 of 12 passes for 87 yards but threw one interception. Running back Darius Barrett led the ground game with 78 yards and added 42 yards receiving. Krasod defense recorded three sacks compared to two for El Paso.

Special teams played a critical role, as Lobos punter Sylvester Brown repeatedly pinned the Rangers back, forcing multiple fair catches and touchbacks that limited the Rangers' field position. Both Pettus' field goal and extra point were reliable from the Lobos side.

The game marked El Paso's second consecutive victory, a sign of early momentum in a fiercely competitive division. Despite the loss, the Rangers showed resilience but were ultimately unable to score a touchdown and convert opportunities inside the red zone.

The Lobos will seek to extend their winning streak next week, building on a balanced offensive attack and a defense that limited their opponents to just one field goal. Coach Ivoyr Roberts’ team appeared solid in all phases of the game, particularly in defensive stands and special teams execution.
