EL PASO, TX — The Lobos improved to 5-2 on the season with a commanding 20-0 road victory over the Rangers on October 18, 1998. The win marks the Lobos' third consecutive victory under head coach Ivory Roberts, solidifying their position near the top of the division standings.

The game was largely controlled by El Paso's defense, which recorded six sacks and forced two fumbles, limiting the Rangers to just 105 passing yards and 50 rushing yards. The Lobos defense also contributed directly to the scoring, with defensive tackle Charlie Leak causing a key sack and forced fumble deep in Rangers territory early in the first quarter. Leak recovered the fumble and returned it 11 yards to the goal line, setting up the Lobos' first touchdown.

James King led the Lobos offense with 107 yards rushing and added 31 receiving yards, helping maintain consistent drives throughout the game. Quarterback Josef Smith completed 17 of 31 passes for 177 yards and threw one touchdown pass to tight end Joshua Rohr, who finished with 68 receiving yards and the game's only offensive touchdown.

Rohr opened the scoring in the second quarter with an 18-yard reception from Smith, extending the Lobos' lead to 13-0 after Bradford Pettus converted the extra point. Pettus was perfect on the day, adding two successful field goals including a 48-yarder late in the third quarter to push the lead to 20-0.

The Lobos' defense consistently stifled the Rangers' offense, which failed to convert any third downs and did not reach the red zone. Ranger quarterback Daniel Fuhr was sacked twice, including the crucial strip-sack by Leak in the opening minutes. Despite 27 passing attempts, Fuhr was kept to 11 completions and was unable to generate any points. The Rangers also committed two penalties for 10 yards.

El Paso's special teams contributed with solid punt coverage, as Sylvester Brown’s punts frequently pinned the Rangers deep in their own territory. The Lobos also forced a fumble in the red zone at one point but were unable to capitalize following a turnover on downs.

With this shutout victory, the Lobos improved to 4-2 within the division and now sit second in the standings, just behind the leaders. The Rangers fall to 2-5 overall and remain fourth in the division, still searching for their second win of the season.

Lobos head coach Ivory Roberts will look to build on this dominant performance as the team aims to maintain momentum in the second half of the regular season.

“It was a total team effort defensively, but that recovery and touchdown early on really set the tone for us,” Roberts said. “We kept applying pressure all game and our offense took advantage when it counted.”
