The Big Horns fell to the Tropics 10-9 at home in a Week 2 regular season contest on September 13, 1998. The game featured a defensive battle with limited scoring opportunities and both teams struggling in the red zone.
Big Horns head coach Keith Huskey's team struck first with a second-quarter touchdown. Quarterback Johnny Callahan connected on a 5-yard pass to tight end Don Miller, who maneuvered effectively for the score. The Big Horns failed to convert the extra point, with kicker Richard Pressley's attempt wide right, leaving the score at 6-0.
The Tropics responded in the third quarter. Quarterback Barry Concannon threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to tight end Arthur West, tying the game at 6-6. Henry Powers successfully kicked the extra point.
Defensive units dominated much of the game as neither team converted a third down, and both offenses faced multiple challenges. The Big Horns were intercepted twice, including a third-quarter interception by Joseph Ochoa, while the Tropics threw two interceptions themselves.
Big Horns quarterback Johnny Callahan passed for 224 yards and one touchdown without interceptions. On the ground, not much production was seen from the Big Horns, recording 28 rushing yards.
In contrast, the Tropics accumulated 85 rushing yards and one touchdown, which aided in their offensive success alongside passing contributions. Both kickers made one field goal each in the game.
Big Horns special teams were active, with punter Rolando Wilson frequently pinning the Tropics deep, contributing to the defense’s overall efficiency. The game saw multiple punts fall for touchbacks, limiting returns.
Penalties were a factor as the Tropics committed nine penalties for 69 yards, while the Big Horns had four penalties totaling 36 yards.
With the loss, the Big Horns drop to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in their division, currently sitting in third place within the division standings. The Tropics improved to a 1-1 record.
The close score and inability to capitalize in scoring opportunities continue to be areas the Big Horns will need to address moving forward in the season.
